As many may have heard, Frontier Airlines will be exiting our market due to financial challenges after the first part of March 2012.   The Gogebic-Iron County Airport has been working on a replacement carrier and having a flight schedule in place before Frontier’s last day. 

The Department of Transportation (DOT) placed a request for proposals from interested air carriers. Great Lakes Airlines submitted a bid to provide service and the service will be through Minneapolis.  Our community did not receive any other interested bidders, but this has become a common event because the EAS market providers continues to shrink and the cost to operate an airline profitable is continuously under attack with the rising energy costs.

 The options we are facing leave us a limited choice, but our community will benefit with Minneapolis as our hub and connections through most of the Major Airlines, most notably Delta.
